Preventing Summer Reading Skills Loss

Research shows that on average, minority and low-income students lose two months of reading skills every summer.

Over half of these children do not have books at home.

During the school year, these students are surrounded by teachers, books, and programs that support their individual needs. But during the summer months, reading and learning is limited, particularly for children who lack access to books at their skill level.

CIS of Durham is one of very few organizations looking out for these kids. We prevent summer reading skills loss through the Durham READS program. This research-based, literacy initiative for rising 4th grade students mails two new books to kids every two weeks of the summer. We also provide special incentives that encourage kids to read alone and with an adult.
