LOTS FOR LEARNING

Mission:

Lots For Learning engages local real estate developers, Realtors®, builders, mortgage brokers, and attorneys in giving back to the community. It’s affordable for them, and it and benefits Durham schoolchildren and their families. More info here… Lots For Learning info

Description:

Lots For Learning allows real estate professionals to make a volunteer donation per closing transaction. The professional chooses a standard donation amount. Upon closing, we mail the customer a letter of appreciation saying the professional has made a donation on their behalf. We list the professionals on our website, including a link to their websites. We include participants in our Lots For Learning press releases and marketing materials.

Endorsements:

Lots For Learning is endorsed by the North Carolina Association of Realtors® and by First Lady Mary Easley.

Why participate?

This is a way for real estate professionals to lead the way in giving back to the community – and to be recognized for it. To be part of Lots for Learning is to make a tangible contribution to Durham’s schoolchildren. You only donate when you close a sale. Donations are 100% tax deductible.

How does it work?

   1. CIS presents Lots For Learning to the Real Estate Company, Realtor®, developer, builder, mortgage broker and attorney.

   2. The Real Estate Company, Realtor®, developer, builder, mortgage broker, and attorney pledge with CIS annually to participate in Lots For Learning.

   3. Each participant determines his/her donation amount.

   4. The Company sends a donation check on its behalf.

   5. The participants send a monthly donation check along with the names and addresses of their buyers or sellers.

   6. CIS of Durham writes each buyer a letter saying the participant has donated money on the buyer’s behalf, thereby giving back to the community.

7. CIS of Durham writes the participant a thank-you letter for each donation, for tax purposes.

8. CIS of Durham promotes Lots for Learning participants on its website (including linking to the real estate professional’s website), and in related press releases. CIS provides Lots for Learning marketing materials for participants.

Kids Can't Learn If They are Hungry

“You don’t know what timing you have. I have two kids, one in elementary school and one in middle school, and I didn’t know how I was going to feed them. I only have 3 cans of food in the house and my food stamps weren’t coming in for 2 and a half weeks.” —parent of a child in the Weekend Backpack Food Program

Check out what's new in 2007

Our goal is to help Durham Public Schools reduce the annual dropout rate by 50% in 5 years. To achieve this ambitious goal, we are initiating several new programs including:

  • Durham’s Performance Learning Center — an innovative, nontraditional high school at Northgate Mall designed to help students graduate on time
  • Incredible Years Program — a research-based program helping children learn prosocial skills
