CIS of Durham Students

Do more for Durham's at-risk youth - Volunteer Today.

CIS of Durham works closely with university interns, work-study students, and corporate and community volunteers to meet the needs of our students and their families. Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Academic Mentors: Mentors provide a positive influence, encouragement, and hope for young people who are 1-2 years behind in course credits. Mentors work in Neal Middle School and Durham Performance Learning Center - 1 hour per week commitment.
  • Database Intern: Works closely with the research analyst and parent program coordinator to document information regarding the parenting programs at various Durham public schools. Basic duties include requesting further information for documents that are deemed incomplete, verifying, correcting, and deleting unnecessary data, entering information into specific files, and deciphering handwriting, recordings, or faded text and transferring them into digital data - 20 hours per week.
  • Graduation Coach Intern: In partnership with the Durham Performance Learning Center. Basic duties include assisting Graduation Coach in day-to-day tasks, connecting community resources to the school, ensuring proper documentation is on file for volunteers, initiating and facilitating tutoring and mentoring programs for students, working as the liaison between tutors, mentors, and the Graduation Coach - 20 hours per week.
  • Parenting Program Volunteer: Works with the Strengthening Families Program (middle school youth and families) as well as the Incredible Years Parenting Program (elementary aged parents). Provides support in getting programs running by performing basic administrative tasks, communications tasks, collecting supplies, etc. Volunteers are also wanted to assist with developing activities for children of programs. Spanish speakers preferred but not required - Minimum of 2-3 hours per week.
  • Event Assistant: Volunteer on the day of an event or be part of an event committee.
  • Fundraising, Marketing, and Public Relations Assistant
  • Administrative Tasks: Help organize our files and office supplies - 3-4 hour one-time commitment.
  • Committee Membership: Use your professional talent by serving on one of our committees. Positions subject to prior committee approval and background check. Committees available: Marketing/Public Relations, External Relations, and Programs.

Internship and volunteer opportunities are available at our school sites and our central office. Internships are unpaid; however, students receive an invaluable work and learning experience and typically receive course credit. All volunteer applicants must pass a background check before being placed at one of our sites.
