#25DaysOfGiving: Give the Gift of Exploration

Day2.jpg
For underprivileged youth, the chance is explore the world beyond the four corners of their city or town is a rare one. But finding unique ways to expand a student's horizon is an important goal for Communities In Schools of Durham. Learning about different cultures and countries allows our students to be global thinkers, and an exposure to diversity equips them with 21st-century skills for understanding. This is why we aim to bring interactive resources like the Little Passports explorer kit to our students. This monthly subscription takes students on a journey to countries like Japan, Spain, and Egypt, following two characters as they learn about the food, language, geography, and history of each.

“In a world of shrinking budgets, it great to have authentic and innovative materials to enhance student learning,” says Brittany Gregory, a Student Support Specialist at Y. E. Smith Elementary School. “Interactive materials help capture student interest and spark the natural inquisitiveness about their world around them.”

These types of resources also integrate literacy and social studies in the classroom, Brittany says, and can prove a powerful platform to strengthen students’ critical thinking skills. CIS of Durham aims to make these resources available to all our students, but we can't do it without the help of our community supporters. A gift of $100 can send 15 students on a monthly global expedition with the Little Passports explorer kit. “Learning about different cultures will help students understand the way of life of their peers, community members and others around the world,” Brittany adds. “It can help reduce misconceptions and apprehension of trying new things.”
